If you saved a photo on your iPhone but can’t find it, don’t download it another five times just yet. First, check how Photos is sorted and whether the image was actually added there rather than saved in Files or left in the conversation it came from.

A photo received today may have been taken years ago. If Photos sorts it by capture date, it won’t necessarily appear alongside today’s pictures. That doesn’t mean saving failed.

1. Look among recently added items

Open Photos and return to the full library, leaving any albums or search results. On recent iOS versions, open Sort and Filter and choose Sort by Recently Added, or the equivalent option in your version.

Now check the most recently added items. You can also look in Collections for Recently Saved, which includes media saved from other apps and photos received through AirDrop.

Names and locations of controls vary between iOS versions. The goal is to distinguish when you added the photo from when it was taken, rather than checking only today’s capture date.

For example, a childhood photo a relative sends you today may retain its original date. Looking only among pictures taken today might not help you find it.

2. Remove filters that could exclude it

If you’re viewing only favorites, videos, or another group, a correctly saved photo might not appear. Clear active filters and check the full library again.

Also check view options where available. Some categories can be hidden from the library view without the files being deleted.

Don’t change a photo’s date just to make it appear at the end of the grid. Try sorting by date added first. That lets you find the image without changing its capture information.

3. Did you choose Save Image or Save to Files?

Photos and Files are different destinations. An image downloaded from a browser or email may have been saved in a folder rather than your photo library.

Open Files and check Recents, Downloads, and the location you chose. Search for the filename if you remember it. You can also check your browser’s download list to see whether the download finished.

If you find the image and want it in Photos too, open it and look in the share menu for an option such as Save Image, where available. Then return to Photos and check recently added items. Not every attachment is an image: a PDF remains a document even if it contains a photograph.

4. If it came from WhatsApp, return to the chat

Seeing a picture in a chat doesn’t mean a copy already exists in Photos. Open the image in the conversation and check whether the app offers a save command.

If you turned off automatic saving, you may need to add that particular photo manually. You don’t have to turn saving on for every image just to keep one memory.

To avoid confusing downloads inside a chat with saves to your library, read how to manage WhatsApp photos in your iPhone library.

5. Is it in Photos but missing from the app you want to send it with?

If you can open it in Photos, it was saved successfully. The issue may be the other app’s view or permissions rather than the image’s location.

Check that app’s photo access in iPhone settings. If access is limited, add the image to the allowed selection where supported. You don’t need to grant access to your entire library just to choose one picture.

The picker may also sort items differently from Photos. Check albums, search, and the capture date before deciding the image has disappeared.

6. Only then, check for possible deletions

If you remember seeing it in your library and later doing a cleanup, check Hidden and Recently Deleted. For recovery steps, use the guide to accidentally deleted photos. Don’t empty collections or delete more pictures while searching.

If you never saw it in Photos, return to its source instead: a chat, message, email, or download. Photos can’t display an image that was never added to it.

Once you find it, open it full-screen and check that it’s the version you wanted. If you saved it repeatedly, review the copies carefully before removing any.

PicVore can help you review images already in your library, starting from dates or albums and selecting multiple items in the gallery. That’s an organizing step after your search, not a way to find attachments left in another app.
