Tapped the trash button on the wrong photo? Do not panic. In most cases, a newly deleted photo does not disappear permanently right away.
The Photos app normally keeps deleted photos and videos in Recently Deleted for 30 days. During that window, you can recover them and return them to your library.
How to recover a deleted photo
On a recent version of iOS:
- open the Photos app;
- go to Collections;
- scroll to the utilities area and open Recently Deleted;
- tap View Album and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode;
- select the photo or video you want back;
- open the actions menu, tap Recover, and confirm.
The exact position of these controls may vary slightly by iOS version. Once recovered, the item returns to your photo library.
How long do you have?
Items stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Photos may show how many days remain before each item is permanently removed.
Do not wait if the photo matters. Also be careful not to choose Delete inside Recently Deleted: that action permanently removes the selected item before the 30-day window ends.
If the photo is not in Recently Deleted
Before assuming it is gone, make a few checks:
- search Photos by date, place, person, or keyword;
- check the Hidden collection and unlock it when prompted;
- on recent iOS versions, look for a Recovered collection;
- check whether you sent or saved a copy in a message, another app, or on a computer;
- make sure you are not viewing a collection or filter that excludes the photo.
Sometimes a photo seems deleted when it is simply hidden, filtered out, or stored somewhere else.
What happens after 30 days?
If the item is no longer in Recently Deleted and has been permanently removed, Photos does not provide a command to restore it. You may still have another copy in an external backup, on a computer, or with someone you sent it to.
Be cautious with services promising guaranteed recovery. The outcome depends on whether another copy exists and on your specific situation. If the image is genuinely important, avoid making more rushed deletions while you check where else it may be stored.
How to prevent the same mistake
When cleaning up, separate selection from final confirmation. Work in small groups, enlarge uncertain images, and review everything before completing removal.
The most useful safeguard is not recovering better. It is giving yourself one last chance to change your mind.
